Mia Abyssinian Adult Female for sale in Davis, California

Mia's story
Mia: born 2015, F, Abyssinian mix
Want a kitty that looks like a cougar? Mia has that look. I don't quite know what it is about her. I think partly it is her crumpled ear, and the shape of her head, the deep intelligence in her green eyes.
She is the nicest girl. She has a very wild look but has a loving personality. Mia is an affectionate girl and will turn herself almost upside down to put her head in your hand. And press down hard. She is not thrilled to be held up in the air though she is polite about it. She will come onto your lap and it is likely she will watch late night movies with you.
I do think she does have the wild heart of a hunter. You can see it when she plays with a feather which she loves to do. She will hold back motionless and then grab it with both paws at once. Caught! Totally caught. No messing around. I think she is one of those cats who are old souls. There is something very special about her intensity and this may add to her cougar look.
She was surrendered to a shelter along with five Abyssinian kittens. Four were three months old and one was five months old. Someone was breeding or letting breeding happen and had at least two breeding queens since she could not produce two litters so close together. Purebreds took them all into foster. I also had one of the kittens, Grayson, who really looked just like her; the similarity is so beautiful. I had hoped they would want to stay together and could go home together but I doubted it. Mother Nature wants to clear the decks for the next litter so when kittens are weaned most often their moms want nothing more to do with them. Nothing! This was true here and we had to separate them.
Mias sparkling white feet and bib are not an Aby trait and show that she is a mix. She has the Aby face and ears and sort of a ticked coat so she is a beautiful mix. The queens kittens were very true to the Abyssinian look. In Mias personality, you can feel she has had a hard unsettled time in the beginning of her young life. I expect there were a great many cats around. She loves attention and probably did not get enough of it. I doubt she was pampered and focused on. No one was really taking good care of her or her ears, for example. So she is very grateful for love from humans. She needs a home where her family will be happy to make it up to her for the lack of care she has received. She will be so delighted.
Mia is a kitty who has FIV, the Feline Immunological Virus, the weakened feline equivalent of HIV. She needs exactly the care that any cat needs-- to be kept safe inside, to be fed high quality food, to be given tons of love, and to receive good vet care. All this is done to keep kitties happy and their immune systems strong. This is a diagnosis you know about. Life gives no guarantees and you could just as easily adopt a cat with more serious problems like heart disease or a propensity towards kidney troubles. It is just that FIV is easy to test and you can know about it. Estimates are that 3- 4 % of the cats in the US have FIV and almost none of their owners know about it. If this FIV issue worries you, read up on it. Research is showing FIV+ cats generally live as long as other cats. However, you will find disagreement about FIV on the web. My sense is that we are in transition as the old kill-the-cat-immediately idea is falling away as studies show a newer, more positive understanding. & Yes, Mia would have been put down at the shelter if Purebreds had not taken her. Some shelters and rescues no longer test for FIV thinking it is still misunderstood and causes adopters to stay away unnecessarily. One organization says, "FIV has not killed many cats but the humans who have misunderstood it have killed thousands." Not good.
Some people think FIV+ cats should be the only cat in the home. Others, myself included, do not believe this is true but it does not matter here because Mia wants to be the only cat in her home. She likes some cats and ignores many and dislikes others. We have had her a while now and have seen this variety. So it is easiest to send her to be the only cat in a home, though a family with an old sleepy cat may be fine. I don't know how she is with dogs. She would probably be fine in a family with respectful older children. For the right person, this one of a kind girl will be a fascinating, loyal companion. She will bond deeply with her human or humans. It will be very satisfying to watch this hard luck girl enjoy her life.
Her foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
